Known and loved for its star-shaped fruits and deep burgundy color, our whole star anise is the spicy and highly aromatic fruit of an evergreen tree native to northeast Vietnam and southwest China. Similar in flavor to anise seed, star anise is often used in stir fries and in many other dishes. When added whole and slowly simmered with soups, stews, and braising broths, star anise lends a flavor that's both sweet, licorice-like and peppery.
